Read the Project
Scenario and Its Dimensions
Created
by: Rita Lane, Snowhill School
Grade Level: 5th
Estimated Time for Project: Ongoing for 2 to 3 weeks
Scenario:
Teacher and/or students need to select a product to sell to parents
and the community for a profit. To fully benefit from the project and
if time permits, the product should be made by the class and customized
for the individual customer. Another alternative could be selling a
ready-made product or food or plant item such as poinsettias. To simplify
matters, the product should be available to the customer with no more
than 4 or 5 variations. For example, students could paint clay flowerpots
of various sizes and colors for plants or decorate small wooden craft
boxes. Students will need to choose a company name.
The purpose of this project is for the students to gain an understanding
of the entire manufacturing process from sales to production to shipment.
Students will need to assume the following roles: (More than one student
can fulfill each role.)
Salespersons: Each one takes the order from the customer and begins
a project file either on the computer or on a sheet of paper. Project
fill will include a coversheet, the order, a drawing, and a description.
It will also include a description form, a price quotation, and a preliminary
parts list. A target date for delivery and completion will be signed
by the customer. Each salesperson will record the sale in the Quote
Log.
Project Coordinator: Manages the design review and the customer sign
off. He/she will order items that need a long lead-time. (Items that
may need to be purchased specially from a store.)
Design Engineer: Creates a layout drawing-for example a drawing of each
side of the item showing the decorative design. Drawing is returned
to PC for customer to sign off on this drawing. He/she then creates
an assembly drawing with any special detail drawings needed. He/she
also completes the Bill of Materials listing every single part/material
needed.
Data Administrator: Enters any specialized or customized set-ups into
computer and any special outside costing.
Manufacturing Engineer: Creates routing and any special directions (programming)
needed for the product.
Cost Accounting: Updates and maintains all costs on the computer.
Planner/Buyers: Controls and forecasts the inventory requirements. He/she
determines whether the product can be made in-house or must be outsourced.
Coordinates with sub suppliers for what must be bought.
Purchasers: Purchases necessary supplies from various sources.
Assembly: Schedules various assemblies for the product as well as inspection,
testing, and packaging.
Product assembly Line: Actually puts product together per drawing(s).
Warehouse Manager: responsible for receiving, inspecting, locating,
kitting parts for assembly and responsible for packing and shipping
finished products.
Project Dimensions:
This project is designed for a class of at least 20 students. Several
"jobs" can be filled by one or two persons. To maintain adequate numbers
of orders, all students could be Sales Persons and work on the assembly
line as well as fulfill another role. This project would extend over
two to three weeks minimum using from 30 minutes to 1 hour per day depending
upon complexity of the product. Project will integrate learning outcomes
from writing, reading, math, and science. Competencies and skills/qualities
will also be developed and utilized.
